I Spend Every Day Around AI. I Still Can’t Tell You Where It’s Going.

This past weekend I was at two dinner parties where I felt like the music stopped and everyone looked at me. a Professor, lawyers, a banker, a city worker. So… “is AI going to kill us all?”

I guess I didn’t see that coming. AI has become the dinner party topic, and right now it may be more polarizing than politics.

I’m not an AI expert and I don’t have a technical degree. I am lucky to spend time every day with entrepreneurs building in AI, so I know a fair amount about the business of it: what a round costs, which workflows actually changed this year, what it looks like when a demo turns into revenue. About where it all ends up, I mostly read what everyone else reads.

I tried to turn the conversation back to the table: how are you using it, what tools do you like, what do you think happens next? And I said I wonder whether even the most senior people at the model companies know where this is headed.

We’re in a moment where those of us in tech and investing are expected to have a view, or at least to shed some light for everyone else on what we’re seeing. I feel that, and I can’t really deliver on it.

Things are moving very fast, and spending my days around it hasn’t made me any better at predicting it. I’m not sure whether that should worry me.

Is everyone else getting this at dinner too? What do you say when the table turns to you?
