The VC “Cocktail Party” Stress + Value

I sometimes joke that we’re an event-planning firm with a side business in VC.

Last week, I lived through a real tale of two parties (I know – rough life!): hosting a small event in Austin and then a larger “Founders & Friends” mixer in NYC, back-to-back.

It was exhausting, but it gave me a few clear reminders of why we actually do this.

1. The logistics

Photos make these events look seamless, but the backend is a grind. We’ve invested a lot in systems, staff, and tools to make them work and yet, it’s still stressful.

We do our best with invite lists, but we inevitably miss people or mess something up. It’s part of the process. Our original NYC date got wiped out by a snowstorm, so we scrambled to reschedule. So much for global warming?!

I also did a 6am flight in and out of Austin and was definitely feeling it. But once you’re on the ground, you have to bring the energy no matter how tired (or antisocial) you feel 😉

2. The cost

Sourcing sponsors isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s a real sales job to make the math work. We put meaningful capital and effort into these events and are super grateful to all of our sponsors for our events! Attribution is hard, but I still believe the ROI is real, even if it doesn’t show up cleanly in a spreadsheet.

At larger events, you only get a few minutes with each person. It can feel more like a wedding than a business gathering. There’s a low-level stress to it – you almost need a ready line for each quick interaction before moving on.

4. The toast

I used to think a short speech was unnecessary – people are just there for the margaritas, right!? I’ve come to realize the host’s toast is the most valuable 180 seconds of the night. It anchors the room, reinforces the mission, and creates a shared moment.

It was a crazy week of travel, weather delays, and logistics. But seeing everyone in person – founders, partners, teammates made the time, budget, and effort feel completely worth it.

Still tiring. Still stressful. Still absolutely worth doing.
