Creation Is Cheap. Editing Is the Superpower.

One of our founders sent a topical question to our portfolio Google Group the other day, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it:

Are two-week sprints antiquated? Given what AI has made possible, should we be asking ‘what shipped’ every week? Every day?

For founders, AI has unlocked opportunities everywhere:

– Agents that generate output faster than it can be reviewed
– Five integrations promising the same user growth
– The itch to build every feature your competitor announces
– Advice on ‘quick wins’ from every direction

Everything looks decent. Everything feels urgent. It really is cheaper and faster to build new features.

With AI, you have ten ‘pretty good’ options for every choice… and one calendar.

Creation is no longer a bottleneck. In the age of instant prototypes, entrepreneurship is all about editing.

Strong teams don’t try to ‘do it all.’ The best founders:

1. Pick a small number of bets.

2. Protect time for them.

3. Say ‘not now’ to good work so the great work has room to compound. Then rinse and repeat tomorrow.

When everything is replicable… taste is the ultimate differentiator!

The next set of generational founders will be the ones who can balance being opportunistic with staying laser-focused on what wins and editing out the noise for their teams and customers.

Founders aren’t the only ones overwhelmed. Consumers have infinite choices too, with very little attention to go around. Churn will be a defining risk of the AI era: startups that ship too much, confuse users, and quietly lose them. Simplicity drives stickiness.

Founders are now editors-in-chief of UX, and they must be ruthless curators. Always ask yourself:

– How simple and approachable is your core product experience?
– Are you stripping out everything your users don’t need?
– Does your copywriting crisply differentiate you from competitors?
– Is it clear who your product is NOT for?
– Is your product ‘delightful’?

Companies who are religious about simplicity have cult followings who thank them for it. Restraint is a superpower. My favorite founders jump on things selectively and say no to distraction.

Bells and whistles used to be selling points, but now they’re liabilities. Clarity is a competitive moat.

Creation is cheap. Editing is the superpower.
